ひまわり畑、雪原、のんべえ横町、四万十川に架かる橋、さまざまな風景に潜む完全なる死。そこに写るのは、悲壮感ではなく、その瞬間まで生きていたという永遠のリアリティ。生と死、それぞれの姿に美しさがあるのならば、蜷川実花の対極にあるのが伊島薫の写真表現なのだろう。

Doesn’t this have the feel of a magazine fashion spread? A thin idea spread out over many pieces. How would it be received if every one in his images was not sexy?
If they were ordinary, old, ugly, male… would people still want to gawk? It reminds me of Jen Denike’s early vampire pictures.

何気なく蜷川実花と比べていましたが、女性の美しさを写真に収めるという点では、伊島薫もファッション・フォトグラフと呼べるかもしれません。確かに、のんべえ横町でスーツを着たおじさんが横たわっていたとしても、誰も見やしないだろうし・・・。

Izima Kaoru might be able to be called a fashion photograph in the point of containing woman’s beauty in the photograph though it casually compared with Ninagawa Mika. Certainly, even if the uncle who put on the business suit in the Nonbei-street is lying, no one will see.
